The art of a great photo
Photography is an art form. And school photography is no exception.
We all carry powerful cameras in our pockets nowadays, if we have a smartphone – as most of us now do. And this makes for great candid shots when out and about. Whether we are capturing landscapes and landmarks, or documenting our children as they grow up. The immediacy of these images gives you an opportunity which previous generations did not have – to capture every second we want without waiting at the photo shop counter to check if actually we captured our images so fast we cannot see anything other than the big “Blurred image” sticker the developers put on top.
Our ability to capture moments is in part also thanks to the much larger memory card of modern phones – allowing us to take 50 photos until we get the perfect shot for our albums (in the cloud usually – it’s 2022!)
However, we still often rely on professional photographers for events and special moments we cannot risk missing the moment for – weddings, engagement parties, baby showers, 1st birthdays, and many more. Anyone who has had a professional wedding photographer and compared the photos to those from guests at the wedding will also be able to attest to the difference in quality of both the framing of pictures and the way we look in those photos. Getting the right angle, light, framing and exposure can all help to make the perfect photo – not on the 50th attempt but on the first shot. No more blurred, out of focus, missed snapshots.
That is what a professional photographer brings to each image and event. They also have the equipment to do appropriate photo editing – not the kind you see in Vogue or Cosmopolitan magazines where people are slimmed and made blemish free (unless that is what you are after in your own wedding pictures!) but the kind that ensures everyone is drawn to the key moments without distractions like background mess.
Picture size and quality is also really important if you want to use your photos on a website or have them blown up to bigger sizes to be framed.
Even in a digital age of cameras in our pockets, a professional is needed when you need to get the job done efficiently and with great results every time.
Our school photographer has been to hundreds, if not thousands, of schools and knows exactly how to capture the right shots at the right time. Not all posed, with every hair in place, but also the real photos which show the viewer a snapshot of your school as they browse through your website or prospectus. If you look through our extensive school website portfolio you will no doubt experience what we do – that feeling of knowing schools you have never set foot in. Simply by looking through the photos and videos on their website. It might not give us the exact picture of what every single day looks like, but we can tell a lot about the individual values, ethos and personality of schools through so many of these photos.
Our photographer always works with a school to ensure they capture the shots which best reflect the values of each school, with a focus on whatever the school thinks are the most important elements of their school life. Then the photographer uses all of their expertise and know-how to get all the right images to reflect each school in a unique way. Schools can then choose their favourites for the website, prospectus, and for any other uses they may need them for.
We love candid photos on our own phones – our children, places we visit, events we have been to – and they have their place in our hearts and on our social media or family photo frames. But a professional photographer brings something extra when first impressions mean the most.
